Day 262 - violin in the making
My younger daughter's young man, Isaac, is a luthier - a maker and repairer of stringed instruments. He showed us today a violin he is making using spruce and maple timber - traditional European materials. He will finish it using a transparent golden brown varnish so the natural wood grain will show through. He would like to keep it to play himself but it will eventually go on the market.

Such a wonderful skill and profession! The couple of violin shops that I've seen in Melbourne always look like sacred places preserving slow craftsmanship. I'm in awe of someone making out of wood an instrument capable of such beauty.
ReplyDeleteYes Tania, this does seem like a sacred art from the past compared to the mass production of such instruments which are of course inferior to the individually and painstakingly crafted pieces.I will pass your comments on to Isaac who will value your appreciation of his craft.
